More Reflections Photos from Awards Program 2014
This photo makes me believe I can hug the sky. It makes me dream of Hawaii. It inspires me to enjoy the view, and to take more pictures!
Photography Intermediate Point Defiance “Delicate Arch”
This photo represents the theme because it inspires me to go to places and see sights that I've never seen. I first saw Delicate Arch from far away. The photo reminds me that it took a long, hot climb to reach the point where I could photograph the arch. When I saw it from far away, I was inspired to make the effort and keep going. That's why this photo represents the theme "Believe, Dream, Inspire."
Intermediate Photography Grant
"The Strong Butterfly"
I watched this butterfly hatch from a chrysalis and then I let it go. Now I'm inspired to grow big and strong like this butterfly

Intermediate
Browns Point
"The Trail Of Inspiration"
I believe in the importance of protecting nature and hiking on this trail made me dream about all the natural beauty in the world. It inspired me to capture this beauty in a photo so that I can have it and enjoy it forever.
Photography Middle Truman "Serenity"
This photo makes me dream of a place beyond, helps me believe that miracles can happen. This art inspires me to go out and explore the world to see what treasures are hidden, to see what God can do, and to see what beauty lies among us.
Intermediate
Browns Point
"Wright Brothers Dream"
I chose the Wright Brothers' theme because flying inspired them to Believe, Dream, and Inspire. They saw the birds in the sky, flying, and that inspired them. They believed, and dreamed that they could fly and their dream came true!
Visual Arts (Collage)Intermediate
Browns Point "A Starry Day In Dreamland"
Roses and Butterflies on a sunny day makes me believe I can do anything and inspires me to have an awesome day!
"Starry Night"
Believe in being yourself, unique and different. Dreams happen on a starry night! Dream on, especially on a starry night. Be inspired and inspire others.
The picture represents a spiritual or a majestic wolf that is inside the florescent radiant unknown world of a dream. The moon shines overhead while the wolf glances up to the sky as his surroundings calmly shift from each dream to the next. The wolfs lean muscles and focused muscles shows that anything is possible through determination and influence. If you believe, you can achieve your dream and inspire others big and small to follow theirs.
I always dream about trees, green, and flowers. The world around me inspires me to draw its natural beauty.
Special Artist Visual Arts Browns Point “Believe, Dream, Inspire”
I believe in colors, bright and dark. I dream of colors, dark and bright. Colors inspire me to believe I can reach my dreams
I dream about circles and oceans and dreams.
"Rainbow Colors"
I like all the colors. They make me feel happy. I like the sparkles...A rainbow dream
"I'm going to draw a tiger...a snow tiger. The sky is blue, the grass will be green, the tiger can go in the middle with some trees. I dream of being a tiger. They run fast.
I had a dream about getting an elf for Christmas. So that is why I wrote this story. I still believe it is possible.
Once upon a time there was a boy named Ben. He was 7 1/2. He was a good little boy. But at Christmas time he always put one thing on his list. He always put an elf. One of Santa's elfs. It was Christmas eve. He had already turned in his Christmas list. This is what he put on it. An elf, skateboard, and a Ipad. It was 8 o'clock, his bedtime so he went to bed. In the morning he woke up. His parents were already eating breakfast. So he went downstairs. His mom said "why don't you open your stocking?" So he did. He was surprised but he didn't find any of the things on his list. There was bubblegum, candy and baseball cards. His mom was baking cinnamon rolls. He had two. After they were all done eating they went into the room with the Christmas tree. Ben saw part of a wrapper that fell off. There was an elf peaking out. He rushed over there and got it. He asked his dad if he could go first so he opened it. It really was an elf. He forgot about his other presents. The elf asked him "do you know how to ski?" Ben said no. The elf said I do it all the time. Ben asked what the elf's name was. His name was David. David asked Ben if he could build him some skis. And he said "Can I borrow a hammer and some other stuff?" They went out in the garage to build them. David was a good builder. David asked "do your parents ski?" Ben said yes. David said we can take you to the slopes and have you start on an easy one. Ben went inside asked if David and him could go sking tomorrow. They said yes. Then he went to check the time. He had to go to bed, so he went upstairs did his bedtime stuff and went to bed. In the morning he had to wake up early to go sking. He got his ski clothes on and went downstairs. He ate breakfast. He had cereal. The he went out in the garage. He got his ski coat and pants on and put his helmet and skis in the car. It was a ten minute drive. When they got there they parked the car and got out. Then they climbed some stairs and put on their skis. Then they got on a chair lift on the easiest run. Then they got off. David went first. He was awesome! He could do backflips and a ton of tricks. Then Ben went he only fell two times. Then they did that run three more times. Then they went to go eat lunch. David had a hotdog and frenchfries. Ben had a hamburger with frenchfries. Their mom had chili with crackers. Their dad had a sandwich with chips. After they were done eating they went back outside. Then they tried a new run. Ben's was good. It was a long run so they had to go home. When they got in the car Ben's parents said that he and David did really good. As they drove home he knew that his dream had come true. Having an elf was so awesome!
Literature: Olivia Parker Intermediate Browns Point "Rosa Parks"
Artist Statement: Rosa wasn't big or strong but she believed in her vision with all of her heart. Rosa's dream was that everyone would be treated equally. Rosa Parks was very inspirational because she believed in her dream, never gave up, and had perseverance
Rosa Parks changed the world with just one simple no Fiercely courageous was this soft-spoken woman What if she had moved seats and not risked her soul No civil rights for every single human.
Its so sad that African Americans had to fight for their right A meaning-o-man, James Blake, drove that Montgomery bus On December 5, 1955 the civil rights took flight The bus boycott caused big changes for every one of us.
Our world would be full of hatred, no smiles Whites, somehow better than others, leading our nation Nobody upbeat for yards and miles Segregation was no cause for celebration.
Rosa Parks proved that everyone can change the world with some persuasion. She was the cause of a chain of events that had to do with desegregation.
Literature: Jamillia Pringle Intermediate Grant "One Smile At A Time"
I am inspired by the difference one smile can make. I believe this dream can come true one smile at a time.
I believe that the way to spread world peace is one smile at a time. If you smile at someone, it will have a huge effect. If someone (anyone could do this) were to do something they regret, one smile could help turn their whole perspective around. All it takes is just one smile at a time.
I dream that one day there will be world peace. Everyone will live in perfect harmony. I believe that my dream will succeed if everyone smiles and everyone they meet; Doctors, classmates, teachers, even rivals; everyone. If you smile at one person, most likely, it will make them smile. They will, most likely, smile at someone else. The pattern will continue until it reaches the other side of the world!
I was inspired one day when I watched a story on the news about a girl that was bullied so bad that she did something very bad. Something she will regret for the rest of her life. In my mind I thought, " if only someone had just smiled at her. Maybe this wouldn't have happened." One smile could have turned her whole perspective of life around, but no one did. To stop other people from hurting others, the first step is to smile. It is as easy as that. So put your smile on and start saving the world today!
Literature: Catherine Rasgaitis Intermediate Browns Point "Jellyfish, Jellyfish, Who Are You?
Artist Statement: Watching jellyfish inspired me to think about wanting to be a scientist. One day, I was learning about all the different kids of jellyfish in the world. I was so inspired by the thousands of species that actually exist. I love science, especially biology. I dream of being a scientist someday studying all the different types of amazing creatures that live on our Earth. I believe that my dream could come true!
Jellyfish, jellyfish, Just who are you? Why are you so amazing? I really want to know.
Jellyfish, jellyfish, I often dream of you of In strange, shimmering colors Of pink, green and blue.
Bright, billowing angels You dance through the night, You blanket the dark sea Like a cathedral of light.
Beautiful but deadly. You sting before you strike; A bloom of angry mushrooms I would not venture to fight.
Is it true you have no feelings, No brains and no eyes? No blood and no heart, And yet you survive.
You lay your tiny babies At the bottom of the sea; You keep them all safe From their hungry enemies.
The fish and the crab, They love you, I can see; You shelter your friends Under your umbrella-tree.
You clearly are a creature So vastly different from me, Made of such translucence So light and so carefree.
What else can you tell me? What more can I know? You intrigue me forever I'll watch you as I grow.
Jellyfish, jellyfish, Just who are you? I want to be a marine scientist, All because of you!
Literature: Max Stewart Middle Meeker "Dream Big, Believe in Yourself, Inspire Others"
Artist Statement: I did this because I always dreamed of being president. I believed I could win and I believed that I could do it. I inspired other kids to run too, and follow their dreams and start their own legacy. Believe in yourself and never give up is also one of the great main points of this piece.
I've always been told to follow my dreams. No matter how great or small, because you never know what you'll get out of it. Start a legacy, and make it a good one. Your legacy could be being a great artist, or getting A's on every project. Leave something behind that people can remember you by. Here's my legacy and how I earned it.
My 5th grade year had just started off and it was going pretty great. But that year I decided it could get even greater! I decided I would start a legacy. I DREAMED I would run for President and be the best one that there's ever been, and ever will be. First up in the long race for President was the primary election. Because there was so many people that ran, they had to cut it down with the primary election.
I was sure to get out, but at least I could say I tried. The next day we voted for the candidates and everyone in my class was talking about how they voted for some guy in another class. I was doomed, fated, in the cards, starcrossed, luckless, and lost. I slunched home and prayed that for whatever happens, it happens for a good reason.
The next day, after school, the school board announced who was moving on. Sure enough, they never called my name, until the very end. I jumped with joy, threw on my backpack and couldn't how my excitement! I made it to the finals. I might actually stand a chance. I had thought to myself. But no, I had to stay positive. So I BELIEVED I could do it and I believed I would start a legacy and be the best president that Browns' Point Elementary School will ever have! I made 3 neon green posters with tabs, candy, a mirror telling the face in it to vote for me, and all sorts of awesome features. I tried being as creative as I could in what I put on the posters, and where I hung them.
I was now feeling a little more confident. So confident, that during my election speech, I got a thundering applause from the audience, and proudly sauntered back to my seat. I made sure to cheer and clap for the other candidates as well. You never know how much that means to a person.
This time I was the guy that everyone in my class was talking about. A few days later the school board announced who won for Treasurer, Vice President, Secretary and best, President. This all added up t this moment, all of my work, my dreams, everything! They said, the new 2012-2013 president of Browns Point is...Max Stewart." That was me! I couldn't believe it! That year I earned respect from my teachers, started my own newspaper, got a great report card, hit my first homerun, and made many new friends. I was a great leader and noticed lots of little kids what looked up to me. I was kind to them and made them feel good about themselves the way I wished that I had felt when I was little.
Me, Max Stewart, left my legacy and completed my dreams, and hope to INSPIRE the little kids that had voted for e. They will leave their own legacies and inspire others just the way I had for them.

A Friend: The Best Medicine of All Middle/Special Artist/ Giaudrone
understood.
By the time I was in the sixth grade, I was longing even more. It seemed selfish, but was true, cancer kids have treatments and are understood by doctors, where as me I had no treatment and no one understood. For Cancer kids it might be horrid but at least you know where your going in life.
But soon after I walked through the doors of Giaudrone Middle School, I found some hope. A friend named Lillian Ball. She was my best friend, and still is. It made sense we both didn't fit in, because neither of believed in being the prettiest or meanest we just wanted to be ourselves. It was that moment you realize you don't have to hide your ways of life. How I thought of it was Lillian needed a friend. I needed a piece of hope.
Early on I figured out that we loved to tease each other. Which was good, because we were best friends. And we didn't care that she got made fun of for being friends with me. And I got remarks about her not being a good friend. But the point was we cared about each other. And that's all that matter to us. Eigth grade came far to quickly. And we both agreed that it was going to be over as soon as we knew it. So one day I turned to her and said "promise me well always be best friends" she looked back at me and replied "cross my heart hope to die stick a cupcake in my eye" and that was the most magical moment for me. The end.
The first snow is like heavenly flowers
Falling from the sky
Twirling all around
Little crystal dandelions
Falling to the ground
First Snow
Is shimmering ice that tastes like magic
Make a bouquet then throw it up in the air
And let it shimmer down.
The first snow whispers
I am here I am here
Aren't you happy I am here?
A Little Boy's Loving Heart- A True Story by Brian Zhang Primary/2nd Grade Brown's Point
It was a beautuful sunny day. A kid named Dylan (who was 6 years old) was very excited because his mom was going to take him to the Pike Place Market. They drove in a car to get there. When they go there, Dylan's mom gave him 10 dollars, and told him he could spend the money on anything. When he walked around the market, he saw lots of cool things he liked to buy. But then he saw a beggar, he was old, with ripped and ragged clothes, and looked very cold. He was begging for food, water, and money. Dylan looked at this poor beggar, and he felt so sad for him, so he gave the beggar all his money.
When Dylan went back to his mom, his mom asked: "what did you spend your money on?" Dylan replied: " I gave all the money to a poor beggar."
This is a true story. I heard it from Dylan's mom, Aunt Brandy. Now Dylan has already graduated from high school.
The moment when Dylan gave money to the beggar, I think the beggar must be very happy because he felt loved; and Dylan must be very happy too because he helped others. I think that is the magic of a moment.

BEFORE your child begins creating their entry, please read the rules!

What is the PTA Reflections Program?
Why should my child try it?
• Reflections is an arts program sponsored by
the national PTA.
• Students enter original works in one or more of these
categories: Visual arts (painting, drawing, collage, etc.), music composition,
literature, dance choreography, photography, or film. The entry deadline is Month Day, 2012
.
• Artworks interpret a different theme each year. The 2012-13 theme is "The Magic of a Moment...".
• Works that best interpret the theme may go on to council, state and national competitions.
Every child that enters will be on display, and all participants will receive
recognition of their efforts.
• Reflections involves awards, but the real focus is simply on getting children interested and involved in the arts.
Just participating gives children confidence, experience, and constructive feedback -- and it's fun!

IMPORTANT F.Y.I.
I just wanted to remind you that the National ID # sent to you may not be 8 digits long and if not, you would put the amount of zero's in front of the number to make it 8 digits long. For example, your id # was 234567 you would add 2 zeros in front so that it reads 00234567.
Also, National is loosening its requirement on the flv. formatting. Entries will be accepted that are formatted according to previous years requirements.
Thanks for all you do for kids and in support of the arts!!!!!

It has been brought to my attention that the guidelines for musical composition form says: Review or download complete rules and tips for quality recordings at www.wastatepta.org/Programs/Reflections. Yet this link does not provide information. The site will be corrected and we will add following information to the FAQ section of the website.
Recommendations for Quality Recordings:
-Make the room you record in as quiet as possible. Close windows and turn off all noise-making devices in the room (air conditioners, fans, telephones, etc.). ----Do not place the recording devise on top of an instrument or speakers.
-Do not record at too loud a level (in the red zone on the meter) or too soft a level (meter barely moving).
-Record a short test and listen to it while watching the meter. If needed, improve recording quality by changing the record volume or microphone location.
-Return to the beginning of the CD and record two seconds of silence; then start performing your composition. Finish with another two seconds of silence. Wendy Tumbleson WSPTA Reflections Chair
