Has your PTA budgeted to send your board members to the convention? Is it on your calendar yet?
SAVE-THE-DATE: April 17-19, 2015
Bellevue Hyatt Hotel, Bellevue, WA
NEW CREDENTIALS PROCESS FOR WSPTA CONVENTION
You are asked to identify the names of those members to whom you are granting voting rights for this year’s Convention.Changes have been made to the process this year to make it simpler for local units and councils.
Step 1: Choose your voting delegates.
Step 2: Respond by email by completing the form sent to your President. The email must come from the email address we have on file for the president(s). Your list of delegates must be received in the WSPTA office no later than April 13th.
If a president does not turn in the names of their voting delegates by April 13th, the attendees will not be eligible to be a voting delegate. If you are the president and you are also the voting delegate for your local unit, you will need to send in your name by the due date as well. There will not be any exceptions to this rule.
If the voting delegate is also part of a council, they will only be able to represent one or the other, they will not be able to vote for both the local unit and the council. If the WSPTA office receives a duplicate name we will let both the local unit and the council know.
The WSPTA Convention is coming soon and the Washington State PTA has made arrangements with the Hyatt Regency Hotel for a discounted room rate ($145.00+tax) at Convention. To take advantage of this discounted rate, make your hotel reservations before March 25, 2015 by clicking here. Please note: If you do not book your hotel room before March 25th, you will not get the discounted rate. There will be no extension of the rate by the hotel.

The name of this class throws people off. The law? No, that's not for me. I'm no lawyer!! But PTA & The Law is for you. Did you know your PTA is a
non-profit corporation? You'll learn what you need to do to maintain your PTA’s non-profit status. You'll learn the legal duties of all Board Members (yes, each member of the Board has legal obligations!) and you'll learn how to protect your nonprofit from being sued.
This workshop is the place where you can receive valuable training.
And if that isn’t enough to persuade you to attend, you’ll learn how to maintain you’re corporate and tax exempt status. You’ll get the lowdown on Washington State’s strict laws on gambling – did you know that raffles are a form of gambling here in Washington?? In short, you’ll get a crash course on some very important information. It is your legal and fiduciary responsibility to your members and the PTA organizations to remain up-to-date on the corporate laws and IRS rules, which change each year. What about the Auction Chair who plans to serve alcohol and hold a raffle? What about
the Grad night chair who is planning to hold a raffle and run multiple
fundraisers? What about the Student Store chair that needs to understand how to properly record the various types of expenses and income associated with the store…..not to mention the many opportunities to pay taxes?
We are fortunate to have the ability to offer multiple classes. Our first PTA and the Law will be in the Lakewood area. Classes in Gig Harbor and Tacoma to be announced soon. There’s sure to be a class that fits your schedule, at a location that works for you. You and your Board Members can attend all together or attend separate sessions. Everyone learns a little something new at each one. If you aren’t able to attend a PTA & the Law workshop offered in our region, you are encouraged to attend the training in a neighboring region. We hope to see you there!!
**This training is free of charge. Remember that at least one board member of your unit needs to attend PTA and the Law to have your unit in good standing in accordance with the WSPTA training bylaw**

Region 10 Challenge: Let's get 100+ PTA leaders from our Region to Attend Convention (Tacoma, University Place, Clover Park, Steilacoom and Gig Harbor/Peninsula).
Reasons to Attend Convention...
Be Inspired! Convention is the place where PTA leaders go to be inspired, understand the issues, and learn the skills to be powerful and effective leaders and advocates. Speakers will includeJeff Charbonneau, 2013 Washington State Teacher of the Year; Trevor Greene, 2013 National Principal of the Year; Felisha W. Battle, Director of Membership Marketing at National PTA; and Erin Jones, Federal Way Public Schools' Director of Equity and Achievement.

Meet vendors and develop new ideas for school assemblies, field trips, fundraisers and a wide-variety of enrichment opportunities for your students. Build on your successful programs and introduce new programs for a fresh, new, and exciting PTA year!
Haven’t decided yet? Sending delegates to the WSPTA Convention will profit your PTA in many ways:
•Convention will motivate and energize you as a PTA leader.
By the end of the weekend, you will have more knowledge, skills, and creativity as a PTA leader and you will come to a deeper understanding of the strength of this association in advocating for children and its accomplishments for children and families over the past 100+ years in our state.
•Attend informative classes.
Over 100 classes are being offered and include classes for the new PTA leader as well as those who have more experience. Outreach: Making PTA More Inclusive
Learn and share ways about how to successfully reach out to all families in your school regardless of race, social economic status, language or other perceived barriers. Help build on the PTA motto "Every Child, One Voice."
Pathways to Success
The information shared in this presentation can be used as a framework to help our local PTA units, councils, and parent groups in helping minority groups get involved and engaged in their schools.
Cultural Competency Part 1
Part 1 of 2 Everyone has cultural attributes that distinguish them from others. By exploring and acknowledging these attributes in one’s own culture, as well as in other cultures, it is possible to create greater opportunity to build relationships and alliances across cultural groups.
National Standards
Promoting and supporting parent involvement in the education of all children has been a priority of PTA at the local, state, national, and international level for its more than 100 years. From implementing programs that create opportunities for parents to connect to each other and their local schools to leading efforts that influence national policy on issues that affect the educational success and healthy development of children and youth, PTA has been and continues to be a powerful voice for all children. That’s not new. What is new is a commitment to expanding the focus to promote not only what schools can do to involve parents but what schools, parents and community must do in partnership to support student learning.
CLASS SESSION 2
The Participation
La Participacion
Why is it important and the need for the family and community to be involved: What does research say? What can the family and community do to be involved. Rights and responsibilities of the parents. What is PTA and the value of its members.
