Academic Acceleration - Proposal to the Tacoma School Board
Academic Acceleration is getting better results for students. Now is the time to bring this expectation of excellence to Tacoma in order to close the opportunity gap, break down stereotypes, and make college real for more students.
Academic Acceleration works by automatically enrolling every middle and high school student who qualifies into more rigorous classes, including Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) – classes that prepare students for college and offer college credit.
Since adopting Academic Acceleration in 2010, Federal Way students are
getting amazing results. The percentage of Federal Way students taking advanced classes increased by 195%, and advanced classes now reflect the racial and ethnic diversity of the community.
That’s why we – parents, educators, and community members – will support you in bringing Academic Acceleration to Tacoma to close the opportunity gap.
Please adopt an Academic Acceleration policy in Tacoma this school year, and begin budgeting for its implementation in all middle and high schools in
2014-15.
The petition and signatures will be presented in April at the TPS board
meeting. Stand will keep you up to date on this and other campaigns.
On February 14, the Tacoma School Board received a recommendation to adopt Academic Acceleration in Tacoma.
Sign the petition to tell the Tacoma School Board that this is the right direction to go.
Academic Acceleration works by automatically enrolling every high
school student who qualifies based on state tests into more rigorous
classes, including Advanced Placement (AP) or International
Baccalaureate (IB) classes that offer college credit.
Join the movement to bring Academic Acceleration to our city!

An Evening with Jamie Vollmer
The Great Conversation: Building public support for public schools one community at a time Cost $20 Register Below
March 28, 2013 5:30—7:30 pm Wilson High School Auditorium
Description
Jamie Vollmer is an award-winning advocate of public education. He has worked
for the past twenty years to help schools and their communities remove the
obstacles to student learning, both in and out of school. His goal is to help
public schools and the communities they serve create a climate that supports
rising student achievement.
Vollmer teaches his audiences how to effectively implement a public
engagement strategy called The Great Conversation. This coherent, comprehensive
program is designed to produce the prerequisites of student success:
Community understanding of the challenges facing our children and our schools,
Community trust in their local schools to accomplish the goal,
Community permission to make the changes needed to teach all children to high levels, and
Community support throughout the complex and emotional restructuring process.
Audience members will learn what they can do to improve local conditions for student learning. They will gain a practical understanding of the positive steps they can take to engage all community members – with and without children in
school – in the creation of schools that unfold the full potential of every child.
About Jamie Vollmer
Jamie Vollmer is president of Vollmer, Inc., a public education advocacy fim working to increase student success by raising public support for America’s schools. Jamie is the author of the highly acclaimed book, Schools Cannot Do It Alone, one of the "top ten books of the year" according to the American School Board Journal. He received the 2012 Friend
of Public Education award from the Ohio Federation of Teachers, and the 2010 Learning and Liberty award
presented by the National School Public Relations Association. Both awards were given in recognition of his twenty year effort to strengthen school/community partner-ships.
With a background in law and manufacturing, Mr. Vollmer entered the education arena in 1988 as a founding mem-ber of the Iowa Business Roundtable. He was, at the time, president of the Great Midwestern Ice Cream Company, proclaimed by
People magazine as the "Best Ice Cream in America!"
In 1990, he changed careers to become the Business Roundtable’s Executive Director.
Once a harsh critic, he is now an articulate champion of America’s public schools. Over the last twenty years he has worked with educators, parents, and community leaders to remove the obstacles to student success.
In addition to his book and numerous articles, Mr. Vollmer has written and produced the videos, The Ever Increasing Burden on America’s Public schools, Why Our Schools Need to Change, and Teachers are Heroes.
Vollmer holds a Juris Doctor from Catholic University, and a B.A. from Penn State. He is married to his college sweetheart, the former baton twirling majorette, Jeanne Hecker. They have three grown children, all gainfully employed.

Educator-authors to speak to staff, community March 19-20
The Tacoma Teaching Black Male Learners Project's parent engagement effort will bring two educator-authors, Mychal Wynn and Dr. William L. McBride, to the district March 19-20 to meet with staff, parents and the community to provide specific strategies to help build student success. The public can attend two free evening presentations.
Wynn will give a presentation for parents and community members March 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at McCarver Elementary School, 2111 S. J St. Wynn's work in increasing student achievement, parent engagement and college readiness has earned him national recognition. He believes college preparation begins in preschool, and if parents don't start thinking about college when their child enters school, they will be at risk of not being ready for college when they graduate from high school. He will talk to parents about how to maximize the K-12 experience to ensure college readiness.
McBride will focus his evening presentation on the differences in male and female brain development that affect behavior and learning March 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jason Lee Middle School, 602 N. Sprague Ave. Parents will come to understand why their children can behave so differently and how to communicate better with them. McBride's work contributes to successful programs that reflect the latest research in teaching reading, literature and social studies.
Wynn will also visit Stanley, McCarver and Manitou Park elementary schools during the day and McBride will conduct site visits to Gray and Jason Lee middle schools. Both consultants will meet with district staff members and Tacoma Teaching Black Male Learners group.
TPS staff will have an opportunity to hear the speakers:

Learn about having a Math Contest & raise money for your school
Dear PTA Officer,
My name is Tom Clymer, and like you, I’ve been a PTA officer trying to raise money for my school. I hated trying to choose which catalog we’d send home with students so that they could pitch overpriced junk to their families. I especially hated sending most of our families’ money to the company behind the catalog rather than into classrooms.
In addition to my PTA duties, I also created a math club at our school. Four years ago the two worlds collided and I realized that I could “sell” a product that had educational value, rather than being sugar or plastic: a beginner-level math contest for all the elementary schools in our district! I created the Seahurst Elementary Math Bonanza and invited all the elementary schools in the Highline School District. The next year, my friend asked if he could use my materials and copy my methods, and the Wildwood Elementary Math Bonanza began for Federal Way Public Schools. With one another’s help and a couple of PTA members, these contests have become annual events. They’ve helped nearly a thousand students come together to share the joy of extracurricular mathematics and raised thousands of dollars for our PTAs through registration fees and concessions, with tens of thousands more to come!
So why am I writing to you? After several years of success in Highline and Federal Way, my friend and I have realized that we can show other PTAs how to raise money while giving their district a terrific educational experience. We’re planning an informal meeting to show how easy, fun, and profitable it can be to run a beginner-level math contest, and we’re hoping you and others in your district will attend. They could be PTA members, staff members, or even members of partner groups in the community. Whoever they are, please send them this invitation to join us at:
Math Bonanza 101
Friday, January 11th, 6:00 PM
Round Table Pizza
7011 27th Street West
University Place, WA 98466
(253) 565-3000 (restaurant)
At this meeting, we will share our success stories and some pizza, then discuss what your district could do to prepare for a successful contest. We’ll also do some quick demos so that you can see how you might run a contest. Afterwards, we’ll give you a CD with everything you’ll need to run a great beginner-level math contest, along with my e-mail address and phone number for the questions that will inevitably come up (actually, they’re below :-).
Please have attendees RSVP to [email protected] or 206-244-5214 with their name and school, so that I’ll know how many pizzas and CDs to get. Please also feel free to ask me questions before the meeting. Finally, please spread the word: bring a friend and pass this invitation on to others who might want to help their schools!
I hope to see you soon!

Back on Track:
Investing in Our Values to Rebuild Washington
The state budget is a reflection of our shared values and goals. The decisions we make about the budget directly affect our ability to educate our children, maintain the health and well-being of our communities, and build a thriving middle class. Unfortunately, the deep economic recession and our outdated revenue system present major barriers to our long-term prosperity.
How can we fund education, healthcare, and things that make Washington a great state to live, do business, and raise a family?
Join legislators, local organizations, and your neighbors for an important community discussion about the challenges we face and ideas for improving our revenue system to make it more adequate, fair and stable.

Evergreen Tacoma is located on Pierce Transit Bus Lines 1, 16, 28 and 57. It is fully accessible, and has a big parking lot. We are asking people who intend to speak to try to arrive a little early to sign in.
As you well know, our state faces great challenges as we move through 2012. The slow recovery from the Great Recession has meant more cuts and reductions for the people of Washington and harder times for the most vulnerable residents of our state.
After making $10 billion in cuts in the past three years, continued lower than expected revenue means an additional $2 billion in cuts to current budget. While we did make some cuts during the special session in December, we still have to find ways to close the budget gap of almost $1.5 billion. While the budget is occupying most of our time, we are moving forward on many other positive pieces of legislation including assuring our state provides the broadest possible access to health care as we implement federal health reform, assuring a woman’s right to choose as health reform is implemented, achieving marriage equality and making sure we continue to be a national leader in early childhood education with our recent receipt of a federal “Race to the Top” award.
We are eager to hear questions and suggestions so we can continue our recovery and emerge a better and stronger state.
Thank you for helping spread the word about this event.
Sincerely,
Representative Jeannie Darneille

TCSN-Three-year Strategic Plan Survey
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ZHSJ5TJ
The Tacoma College Support Network (TCSN) is a collaboration of organizations that promote college, career and citizenship readiness for all Tacoma students by encouraging higher two-year and four-year college enrollments of high school graduates. The TCSN's emphasis is to aid students who have limited access to resources and opportunities, with special focus on low-income and under-represented students.
In 2006 a few concerned parties began to meet to discuss how to continue the momentum of the Achievers Scholarship program for low-income Tacoma Public School students once the Gates Foundation ended its scholarship support to TPS graduates in 2010. Since that time this group has changed focus a number of times and has grown to include a large group of community members.
With the group/network now moving forward in a number of key areas in support of Tacoma’s youth, we believe it is time to establish a Three Year Strategic Plan. Before we begin drafting the plan however, we would like get your thoughts on what the future of this network should look like.

Children in the Recession - Thank you
December 6, 2011
Dear friends,
We are writing, albeit belatedly, to thank you for your support and sponsorship of the Children in the Recession listening forum held last month at Jason Lee Middle School. The event was a remarkable success, and none of it would have been possible without the help and support of our impressive line-up of community based organizations and advocacy groups. We were extremely pleased to see such a great turnout of families and children, and service providers, local elected officials and legislators to hear their testimony.
From the first meeting at the Mandolin Café in Tacoma in September, you graciously gave your help on planning phone calls, contacting your membership, recruiting people to share their stories, providing volunteers to help us on the evening of the event. This was truly a collaborative event.
TVW filmed the entire event and it is stored on their archives, if you or others are interested in viewing it. The link to the video that we showed at the Forum is here at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIPnAzh6p24
“A Child’s Story” was one that local elected officials and policy makers needed to hear as we continue to address the financial ramifications of the recession on state and local government. This forum was inspired by similar events in Connecticut that have shown that the human and fiscal costs of the recession on children can be devastating and lifelong. There is no question that what we heard confirms the same phenomenon occurs in Washington State.
Our deep appreciation to you for all your support and help in making this event such a success.

League of Education Voters
We know the stories are out there. Jerry Large of The Seattle Times published an article about them. From the high school senior facing eight years in prison for a prank involving a blow-up doll, to the third grader expelled for holding up a chicken finger as a weapon, students all over the country are getting pushed out of the classroom in the name of zero-tolerance discipline policies.
While the policies were designed to keep students safe in school, they may be doing more damage than good. More and more students have been kicked out of the classroom for highly-subjective rule infractions. While these policies are bad for all students, students of color and low-income students are affected at disproportionately higher rates.
We’ve held forums in Kent and met with legislators. Now it’s time for Tacoma to add its voice. Come learn what we can do as a community to keep our students in the classroom and out of detention centers. Join LEV for an important discussion on school discipline and how it's impacting our youth.

We are thrilled to announce that former NBA star and current Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson will be back in the Evergreen State on Thursday, Nov. 3rd as part of our Voices from the Education Revolution speaker series.
A strong proponent of ensuring access to a quality education for every child, Johnson returned to his hometown of Sacramento after retiring from the NBA. He went to work on his nonprofit, St. Hope, established to empower urban youth through community engagement, quality educational opportunities and after-school programs. Last year, Mayor Johnson addressed a packed house in Seattle, discussing the opportunity gap, obstacles faced by low-income students and students of color, and a roadmap for change in our schools.
This time, Johnson will be speaking in Tacoma for our first South Sound speaker series event.
Join LEV, in partnership with University of Washington Tacoma and the Black Education Strategy Roundtable, along with community leaders, students, parents, and many sports fans as we hear Mayor Kevin Johnson’s take on how to improve our public education system.
Please RSVP to this FREE public event.

League of Education Voters
Sept. 28, 2011
Please join us on Tuesday, November 1st, as the League of Education Voters, in partnership with Democrats for Education Reform, Excellent Schools Now and Stand for Children presents Voices from the Education Revolution: A Conversation with Steven Brill. Brill will talk about his latest book and then moderate a conversation with education stakeholders offering a spectrum of perspectives on school reform.
Brill’s book – CLASS WARFARE: Inside the Fight to Fix America’s Schools – is a compelling and sure-to-be-controversial narrative of the push for reform that has accelerated rapidly in town halls, in state capitals, and on Capitol Hill in recent years following President Obama’s Race to the Top contest. He tackles hotly debated questions about how to measure teacher competency and set salaries, the role of teachers’ unions, the struggle within the Democratic Party between reformers and old-school union loyalists, and policies like “last in, first out” that require that teachers get laid off based purely on seniority rather than performance.
RSVP for this free public event.

Free Child ID Program offered for your school
New York Life’s Child I.D. program is designed to help children in our community learn how to stay safe in the home, at play or wherever they happen to be. It also provides a comfortable way to develop relationships with young families, businesses, schools and non-profit organizations in your community by hosting a safety-oriented event where all children receive a New York Life-issued Child I.D.
Why Host a Child I.D. Event?
A Child I.D. event encourages family and safety-oriented businesses and organizations to interact with members of the community in a relaxed, fun environment. When you host a Child I.D. event, you are sending a message to your community that your business or organization cares.
Benefit to Parent/Guardian
Having a Child I.D. will give the parent/guardian the peace of mind knowing that should anything ever happen to their child, they will have an I.D. with vital information to distribute to the local authorities.
In only 3 to 5 minutes, a Child I.D. card is printed for each parent or guardian free of charge. Child I.D. cards feature a child’s photo, fingerprints, contact information and other pertinent information needed by the police in case of an emergency.
Please note that children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. No child’s information or pictures are electronically retained. All data is automatically erased upon printing the Child I.D. The only information New York Life keeps is a parent or guardian’s contact information, and only if permission has been granted for an Agent to contact them with more information about New York Life.
For More Information Contact:
New York Life Agent Kevin E. Gent at (253) 921-0834 or [email protected]
