PTA facts - Did you know?
In 1897, Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst organized the National Congress of Mothers to, eliminate the threats that endangered their children. Birney and Hearst called for action with a meeting in Washington DC where more than 2,000 people responded.
From the first meeting of the National Congress of Mothers grew a grounds well of support. Birney appealed, “To all man kind and to all woman kind, regardless of race, color, or condition, to recognize that the republics greatest work is to save the children.” Segregated schools were still legally sanctioned in many states. In 1926, two years after being renamed the National Congress of Parents and Teachers, National PTA held its 30th annual convention in Atlanta, the same year and location that the National Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers was founded by Selena Sloan Butler.
After adopting the same objects and purposes the two organizations returned to Atlanta in 1970 to formally merge as one, and Butler has since been recognized as one of the three founders of National PTA.
Because of PTA our nation has:
* Child labor laws to protect against unsafe working practices and conditions
* Kindergarten as part of our public school system
* Federally funded hot lunch programs
* Juvenile justice system so children would not be tried and incarcerated as adults
* Mandatory immunization
* Labels on music recordings to help parents know which contain “explicit lyrics”
* TV ratings in the upper left corner of our screens to help us know if the upcoming program is suitable for family viewing
What Makes a Family Strong and Successful? There are at least five "L's" which contribute to strong family relationships.
Learning--Families are where we learn values, skills, and behavior.
Loyalty--Strong families have a sense of loyalty and devotion toward family members.
Love is at the heart of the family. All humans have the need to love and to be loved; the family is normally the place where love is expressed.
Laughter is good family medicine. Humor is an escape valve for family tension.
Leadership is essential. Family members, usually the adults, must assume responsibility for leading the family.

Each are having informational sessions and their dates can be seen through their web-links. Green Dot Public Schools is excited and honored to be opening a new middle school serving the Tacoma community in fall 2015. Green Dot’s mission is to help transform public education so ALL students graduate prepared for college, leadership and life. In addition to providing all students the option to go to college, our curriculum emphasizes deep relationships between teachers, students and families and building leadership and life skills so that students excel in life beyond middle and high school. In August 2000, Green Dot opened its doors with just one 9th grade class of 140 students. Today, our organization has successfully grown to serve more than 10,000 students in communities across Los Angeles, CA and Memphis, TN. The U.S. Department of Education has featured Green Dot as a national leader in school turnarounds, and Green Dot schools have been featured in “America’s Best High Schools” by Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, and The Daily Beast. Green Dot works with families and communities in historically underserved communities to demand better school options for their students. The following are some tips for parents to help children cope with holiday stress:
- Discuss holiday plans well in advance, and include your children in the planningprocess. Kids need some degree of control and predictability. Prolonged uncertainty, constantly changing plans or last minute decisions can all increase stress.
- Make sure kids get plenty of rest. While it may be exciting to stay up late, lack of sleep often leads to increased irritability.
- Limit the amount of time kids spend alone watching TV or playing video games.
- Encourage physical activity and interaction with peers.
- Don't promise things you can't produce. For example, don't promise a parent will be home in time for the holidays if the decision is really out of your control.
- Don't try and compensate for an absent family member with lots of gifts. What most kids really want is your time and attention.
- Uphold and maintain family traditions even if a parent is absent. Kids count on certain traditions. They can have an important grounding effect by letting kids know that even though some things have changed, other things have remained the same.

- A hearing is scheduled in the House Education Committee on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at 6:00pm. It is in the O'Brien Building in House Hearing Room A.
- Information on class size stats can be found here: http://classsizecountswa.com/
- Information on the bill itself can be found here: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/billinfo/summary.aspx?bill=2589
- The hearing room holds 120 people (including children!). Wouldn't it be great to fill the room to standing room only and show legislators what an overcrowded classroom, without enough seats, looks and feels like?

What!? Another School Election?
It's true! After last year's historic 71% victory for safe, modern school buildings, it seems like it couldn't possibly be time yet for another school ballot measure.
In just a few short weeks, ballots will arrive in the mail for Propositions 1 & 2. Props 1 & 2 are levy renewals (not new taxes) accounting for nearly a quarter of our school budgets, including critical funds for teaching and learning.
Help us make sure Tacoma gets this vote right the first time, by giving us just a few more hours of your time at the phone banks.
If this vote is successful, this should be the last time we ask you to volunteer for a school measure, for the next four years.
We Need You to Volunteer
We can't do it without you. Please let us know when we can sign you up for a shift.
Phone banks will be taking place Monday through Thursday, from 4:30-6 and 6 to 7:30, from Monday Jan. 13th until the election on Feb. 11th. (With the exception of Jan. 14th & 20th.)
Just take a moment to reply to [email protected] with the date and time that you can come, and we'll take it from there!

2013-2014 Reflection "Believe Dream Inspire" entries moving on to the Tacoma Council must be delivered to Tacoma Council PTA's office on December 3 or 4th between 1 and 5PM. The office is located at the Tacoma Public School's Central Administration Building's (CAB) Annex that faces the main entrance to CAB. Remember, you must enter the entries you are advancing on the National PTA Database before you turn them in to Council. Go to www.pta.org/reflections. First you will register an account. Then they will send you an email which you must go back to and confirm your registration. Then you can enter your submissions. Go to Home - Create Submissions - Click on Student Entry Form (incomplete) - Fill in the information - Save & Exit. Repeat this process for each entry - it can be time consuming, so allow yourself plenty of time. Print out a copy of your unit report (not each individual entry) and turn it in with your entries. A host family is needed for a High School Foreign Exchange student for the 2013/2014 school year who will attend Tacoma Public Schools. A potential host family is needed for the following students: a girl from Germany who loves
playing handball and is the goal keeper on her team, she is an outgoing girl that enjoys shopping, photography, school activities, and listening to music, or a boy from Thailand who enjoys reading, camping, playing basketball, volleyball
and soccer, listening to music and participating in martial arts, or a girl from Germany who loves playing the piano, taking photographs, she speaks German, Chinese, English and currently learning Russian, traveling, shopping and snow
skiing, or a boy from China who is an independent and social boy. He plays basketball, likes to bike ride, keep active and fit and his favorite subjects are Math and Physics, or a girl from Germany who plays the flute, enjoys windsurfing, reading, snow skiing and keeping fit.
Students come with good English skills, full health insurance and their own personal spending money, and mainly the desire to be a member of an American family. We ask our families to provide a bed (shared room is okay with similar age range)
and meals eaten with the family. Host families receive a monthly stipend to help with food and housing costs. Host families do not need to have teenagers of their own; young families as well as empty nesters are excellent high school
student hosts this year.
For more information about the students and the program, contact Jamin Henderson at
360-661-0552 or [email protected].

I know there are several of you who turn in your ballots on the day of the election - I usually do, too!
For this vote, could you get it in as soon as possible?
Please note some important facts I've highlighted below.
Kellie Bennett
Tacoma Council PTA President
Dear Supporter,
Did you know that in 2010, the capital levy passed with a 59.6% Yes vote? This year, Proposition 1, the Neighborhood School Improvement and Safety and Upgrades measure needs 60% to pass. The 2010 levy was only 55 votes away from hitting 60%. Every vote counts.
Prop 1 will help deliver so many necessary upgrades and improvements to our schools in every neighborhood, and create good local jobs. With so much at stake, and when so few votes can make the difference, we need your help. A one-on-one conversation with a voter is the most effective way
to make sure we can hit 60% and Renew our Commitment to Tacoma's school children.
I am writing to ask you to please join us this weekend for a final Sunday phone bank, on February 10th, from 3-6pm at our headquarters at 901 Broadway, #400 in downtown Tacoma. Parking is free on Sunday. We will provide food, refreshments, and the satisfaction that when we wake up on Feb 13th, we will have done everything we can.
This voter-to-voter contact is critical. In addition to the 60% supermajority needed to pass, the bond measure must also validate with a sufficient number of votes--40% of voters from the last general
election. Since the last Presidential election had record turnout, that means Prop 1 must receive 35,733 votes cast. So far, only 22,000 ballots have been mailed back according to the Pierce County Elections office--only 63% of what is needed.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Please call Steve at (425) 765-8510 to RSVP for our Sunday phone bank, or sign up online athttp://renewourcommitment.org/calendar. If you can't make this Sunday, please commit to one of our final phone banks on Monday or Tuesday. Bring along your friends and colleagues
Thank you so much for all of your support. We look forward to seeing you at a phone bank!
Sincerely,
Steve Murakami, Honorary Co-Chair
