President's Message
Welcome new leaders, welcome back everyone else. This is the first e-newsletter from your Tacoma Council PTA this school year. It will arrive in your In-box on Tuesdays every other week. We'll keep you updated on local, council & state PTA news, area events of interest, important dates and beginning this week we will have an on-going segment on the history of the Tacoma Council which was started in 1911.
Congratulations, and thank you for stepping up to become a leader in your school community and in our education community.
I am honored to work with such a diverse group of great volunteers on the Tacoma Council PTA. I can tell you that we all are starting off with a shared fundamental commitment to our public schools and in this volunteer effort that is our labor of love.
The PTA Council is the place where we come together to learn and exchange information, to collectively support our 33+ school sites, and to connect with the larger community of allies who share a passion for public education and a commitment to children's advocacy. Please use our web site and this newsletter as your "information hub". Of course, you are always welcome to call with questions you may have!
This is an incredibly exciting time to be involved in PTA and in the education community. While there will always be unexpected issues that arise and demand attention, I want highlight a few items to keep on our radar that will tremendously benefit our students this school year:
There is so much additional valuable work that PTA leaders can do in helping to build a welcoming community at our schools, educating parents on state legislation that impacts our kids, communicating research-based information on how parents can help their children - issues for which PTA Council can be a terrific resource.
PTAs working together across our district in collaboration with our teachers, staff, administrators and allied organizations can help accomplish great things, and I'm looking forward to working with all of you to make 2015-16 a great year for TPS students! Glancing Back...

This is an incredibly exciting time to be involved in PTA and in the education community. While there will always be unexpected issues that arise and demand attention, I want highlight a few items to keep on our radar that will tremendously benefit our students this school year:
- Tacoma School Board elections this November with two positions up for the taking.
- A new Wainwright Intermediate School now under construction in Fircrest will reopen in fall 2016 to serve students in grades four through eight. That means elementary and middle schools in the region will have new school boundaries -- and some students reassigned to new schools. The schools identified to have some potential boundary changes due to Wainwright's reopening include: Arlington, DeLong, Edison, Whittier, Geiger Montessori, Manitou Park and Franklin elementary schools and Mason and Truman middle schools.
- PT Avenue cloud based membership database conversion.
There is so much additional valuable work that PTA leaders can do in helping to build a welcoming community at our schools, educating parents on state legislation that impacts our kids, communicating research-based information on how parents can help their children - issues for which PTA Council can be a terrific resource.
