Tacoma Council PTA Celebrates NPTA Founder's Day at Council Meeting Feb 13, 2013
February 17, 2013 National PTA Celebrates Founders Day, established in 1897
A Little PTA History
During some of the more difficult days in our nation’s past, PTA has shone the most brightly, working diligently to make sure the needs of children were not forgotten. When the Great Depression hit the country in the early 1930s, nearly every PTA in Washington state embarked on programs to feed and clothe children to keep them healthy and make it possible for them to stay in school. Some PTAs even provided hot lunches to the entire
school in fear that some needy child might be missed. Other PTAs provided breakfasts as well when they found out that some of the children were not having any meals from one lunch to the next. PTAs also purchased clothes, mended clothing and shoes and provided blankets and bedding to great quantities of needy children in our state.
In the 1940s, America became involved in World War II, and PTAs formed war emergency committees and joined with other civic, state and national groups to provide for the common defense and speed the war effort. Aside from child welfare projects, they assisted in scrap and salvage drives, bond and loan campaigns, sponsored school lunch programs, provided nutrition and first aid classes, and participated in other worthwhile projects. In addition, the call for women to join the workforce left kids without care, so many PTAs established
daycare centers in school buildings for the children of these newly working mothers.
As long as PTA exists, its members will look out for the needs of children everywhere. As we celebrate PTA Founders’ Day on February 17, we can reflect on PTA’s past with gratitude for those who served before us, but we also need to remember that we have a task before us today. PTA is as important and relevant today as it was in the past and as it will be tomorrow. Let’s build a strong PTA together and leave a lasting impact on our nation for future generations! Tacoma Council PTA awards Kim Golding with the Outstanding Service Award 2011.
The purpose of the Outstanding Service Award is to recognize and honor volunteers who have worked for children and youth beyond the bounds of a job, PTA, or a specific school community, and who have shown concern for all children and have volunteered to help them achieve their potential.
On February 17, Kim Golding was awarded the PTA Outstanding Service Award by the Council Board, Region 10 Director Kari Wilkinson, and WSPTA President Scott Allen.
Chances are that if you run into another PTA leader in Tacoma, they or the person that encouraged them to take office, have been talked into it by Kim. Talked into that they really could make a difference for kids. Talked into edging out of their comfort zone, slightly . "Got a call from Kim Golding...ran into her in the hallway at school...read the newsletter article she wrote...read the PTA e-mail action alert.... took her class at Convention ....read her school board blog....heard her testify in Olympia"...read it on her license plate "PTA ROX". Kim communicates. She leads...as local unit officer at Skyline and Meeker, Tacoma Council Leg. Chair, Secretary and President, Region 10 Legislation Chair and Director, She's earned the Crystal Leadership Award.
As a Tacoma school board director, member of Tacoma SAFE Streets and member of Tacoma 360 she collaborates and organizes in her community. Kim advocates...for kids with learning disabilities, to help kids being bullied, to keep recess a part of the school day. She walks the talk...mentoring a child at a time, checking on conditions school by school, throughout the District, in the communithy, reporting what effects are happening there into the committee rooms and Legislators' offices in Olympia, and Washington D.C. And Kim appreciates the focused attention and wide sweep of all those angels' wings of PTA for all those years in all those places. And on this evening when we are honoring all of those it's the perfect time to honor Kim for her outstanding service to PTA, the community and kids across Washington state.

Theme of Celebration: "A Century of Stars"
Thursday, February 17, 2011 Doors open 4:30pm
Lincoln High School Cafeteria and Auditorium
100 years ago, a Council of PTAs in Tacoma was created. The organizing PTA units included members from: Bryant, Edison, Franklin, Fern Hill, Grant, Horace Mann, Jefferson, Lincoln, Lowell, McKinley, Roosevelt, Sherman, Sheridan, Stadium High, Washington, and Whitman.
During the celebration, we hope guests will be able to view school/PTA displays of their own PTA history. We are especially encouraging PTAs who were part of the Council from the start in 1911 to participate this way.
For those schools who no longer have PTAs, Tacoma PTA has in its possession many old scrapbooks and minutes books created by those PTAs. Some include Ruston PTA, Mt. Tahoma PTA, Park Avenue PTA, Madison PTA, Stadium PTA, and others. There are even a few scrapbooks belonging to "current" PTAs (Lincoln, Arlington and Whitman come to mind).
We would also like for schools to contribute by providing student artwork which could be used to help decorate. With a 100 year history of Tacoma PTA supporting students and schools, student artwork would definitely be a way to demonstrate this ongoing, important connection.
Attached, please find a "canned" article ready for you to drop into a school newsletter.
For more information, and to let us know how you are contributing/participating, contact Kim Golding, [email protected] or (253) 906-8827

TNT Article: Tacoma PTA Celebrates 100 Years of Service December 29, 2010 http://inyourneighborhood.blogspot.com/
I was a Lowell Leopard, a Mason Mustang, and a Wilson Ram; a born and raised Tacoma Public Schoolsgraduate. Besides my own experiences as a student, I also got a taste of the behind the scenes work that went on through my own mother who served on the Parent Teacher Association (PTA)board. All of the fun events, interesting activities, community projects, and much needed equipment and materials were all generated from the hard work, dedication, and spirit from PTA. As an adult and local parent now, I marvel at how PTA has grown and changed to keep up with changing times and current events. The most important thing I learned is that PTA integrates community and families to take ownership of our public schools and to make them the best they can be for everyone. This is an exciting part of the education and the community building process. Yet, as we move forward with an army of wonderful PTA volunteers that donate their time and talent, it's important to look back on the roots of PTA because the foundations I just described have always been there. It's these roots that give us a rich texture of history, innovation, and experience. Here in Tacoma, our PTA roots are plentiful and deep. So deep, that Tacoma PTA celebrates it's centennial year in February of 201l.
I marvel to think that PTA has been making its mark on our community for 100 years; what an accomplishment. Think of how many students and their families have been touched by the efforts of PTA whether it's a school carnival, a fund raising events, special school guests, community service projects, or replacing playground equipment, PTA has always been there, working hard to give value to their schools. Now as we kick off the new year, it is time to celebrate the extraordinary progress of Tacoma PTA.On February 17, 2011 from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM at Tacoma's Lincoln High School cafeteria and auditorium located at 701 S. 37th Street, Tacoma PTA is hosting a free event for everyone to partake in.
The first hour of the event is a reception followed by a special program for the second hour. Citizens are invited to come see Tacoma history in action through interactive displays, audio visual presentations, and good conversation. What's even better is that local students are a big part of creating this party by using their talents and gifts. Anyone that has been touched by our schools and/or that revel in our city's multi-layered and intricate history, should mark their calendars for one of the most important history events this year. And speaking of history, some of the treasures you will witness are hand bound ledgers from the early 1900's, historic documents that depict the budgets, events, and interest that captured the spirit of each decade here in Tacoma, media and press clips of the people, places, and ideas that made things happen in our city, and pictures that depict a vast celebration of teacher and students working alongside families to make things extra special.
Special—that's what we have here in Tacoma in our schools, past, present and future. Despite changes in our community structure, politics, world, national, and local events, mass changes in our society whether they are big or small, the schools have always been there in rough times and in happy times. And when we see the great activities of PTA in conjunction with the students, it feels good. In today's times, amidst all the bad news and strife and the sense of urgency to focus on what doesn't work, we need feel good stories like this that make us smile and remember. We need stories about learning, teaching, dedication, endurance and fun NOW. Tie that in community pride, and you've got a win-win situation for all citizens of this amazing area in which we live in and love. Further, I'll bet you probably didn't know that Tacoma PTA coined some important phrases and processes that still exist today at a national level? You bet! And there's so much more. All the more reason to come join the celebration and revel. And for this writer, I am reveling in bringing you updates on this event and giving bits and pieces of past eras. It will be a great journey for all of us. For additional information, contact School Board Member Kim Golding, chair of the 100-year event committee, at (253) 906-8827 or email her at [email protected].
